Water beads are a popular toy used to develop sensory and fine motor skills in children and are often labeled as "non-toxic." However, if swallowed they can expand and lead to choking or cause internal blockages that require surgery.
Poison Centers are seeing an increased number of cases of children ingesting water beads. Most children who ingest water beads do not experience severe complications.
Call 1-800-222-1222 or visit PoisonHelp.org if you believe a child has swallowed a water bead.
