ALLIANCE, OH- Throughout the fall semester the Regula Center for Public Service coordinated various campus-wide events and programs to enhance participant numbers, new partnerships in the community and expand events to serve others.

In September, October, November and December, student volunteers cooked and served meals as part of the Tuesday evening hot meal program at Christ United Methodist Church. Supplies for the meals were paid for by the YWCA of Alliance and through this outreach more than 500 meals were served, and more than 125 hours of community service was logged by students.

Each month of the semester also featured a take-and-make project. Through these projects volunteers made 329 placemats, 109 blankets and 236 cards to be donated to area agencies.

Trick-or-Treat for Canned Goods mobilized more than 50 volunteers and resulted in 2,670 pounds of food collected for the Alliance Community Pantry.

In November, members of Order of Omega worked with the Regula Center to host a community Thanksgiving Meal at the Salvation Army of Alliance. More than 180 people were served a meal by members of fraternities and sororities at Mount Union.

Throughout the month of December, the Center coordinated support for holiday outreach through the Salvation Army and the YWCA. Ultimately, more than 100 children in the community were provided with Christmas gifts. On December 8, in collaboration with the Kiwanis Club of Alliance many of the gifts were wrapped as a part of a day long service project. Additionally, volunteers decorated more than 150 dozen cookies and assembled 50 food bags for local families.

Other outreach to finish the semester included wrapping books, decorating cookies, providing refreshments and coordinating volunteers for Christmas at the Park. The annual event is held at Silver Park.

These projects mobilized 275 volunteers and took place in addition to other events including Saturdays of Service and a donation drive for the Alliance Area Domestic Violence Shelter.

Regula Scholars' Trip to Washington, DC

The 2022 class of Regula Scholars visited Washington, DC at the conclusion of the fall semester.

Students Elise Greynolds, Ben Dods, Jarret Richard, Megan Casciola and Kate Kueter traveled with Center Director Abby Schroeder to gain experience through meetings, tours and discussion throughout the city.

The Scholars met with Mount Union alumnus Quentin Rock, a former Regula Scholar and current Aide to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States and participated in a tour of the court.

They also visited with Phil Kiko, Principal, Williams and Jensen, and learned from him about his time at Mount Union and navigating both public service and private positions in Washington, DC.

“Getting the students to see possibilities for employment at all levels of our government is an important part of what we do in the Regula Center. We are fortunate to have so many friends and alumni in various positions that are willing to share with our students. Travel is a great way for the students to learn by doing and we are pleased to offer these experiences,” said Schroeder.

The Regula Center implemented the Regula Scholars Program in an effort to recognize outstanding students and provide them with additional opportunities. This program was initiated and continues to be possible thanks to a lead endowed gift from Bob ‘67 and Linda DeHoff. An additional endowed gift was given by David ’63 and Elaine (Venon ’63) Dabelko in 2014. Since then, all funds raised for the Regula Center have been added to endowments for Regula Scholars.
