One of NCPD’s School Resource Officers (SRO) Phil Taylor, teaching lesson 8 of the newly reinstalled Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) curriculum to the students at Hoover Middle School. DARE is being reintroduced to help children raise their self-esteem, teach them how to make decisions on their own, and help them identify positive alternatives to drugs.

Alongside their main duties of providing a safe learning environment and providing a valuable resource to school staff members, it is also a State of Ohio requirement for CERTIFIED School Resource Officers, which all our SROs are, to provide law-related education to students (3313.951(B)(3)(e)) and identify the trends in drug use, eliminating the instance of drug use, and encouraging a drug-free environment in schools (3313.951(B)(3)(g)).

Ofc. Taylor is currently teaching the lesson plan titled “Keepin’ it…REAL”, which focuses on:

R - Refuse: Saying no, I don’t want to do something

E – Explain: Saying why I don’t want to do something

A – Avoid: Keeping away from a situation I don’t want to be involved in

L – Leave: Taking myself out of a situation I don’t want to be in

Ofc. Taylor has received many compliments from the teachers and administrators at NCMS for his ability to organize and teach the required lessons. Ofc. Taylor has been a police officer for over 20 years and a Field Training Officer (FTO) for most of that time, so teaching is nothing new to him.
