The City of Canal Fulton and surrounding Stark County area are thankfully unaffected by the unfortunate events of the train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. The source water for the Canal Fulton Public Water system is in deep underground aquifers and far enough away from the affected areas of the accident that there are no concerns at this time. Additionally, due to typical west-east weather patterns there are not air quality or surface water concerns. The Canal Fulton Utilities Department monitors the drinking water for various contaminants on a routine basis to follow Ohio EPA guidelines. For those still concerned, the EPA has a public interest hotline that callers can contact to find more information about the areas impacted by the event. Additionally, the railroad company has hired a toxicologist consultant to take calls as well. Those numbers are listed below:
Ohio EPA Public Interest Center – (614) 644-2160
CTEH Toxicologist Hotline – (234) 542-6474
